Do You Hate Your Job? Take This Quiz & Find Out If A Career In Tech Is Right For You!

Feeling stuck in a job you hate is the worst.

And not in the cute, sing-song-y Jean-Ralphio kind of way.

If I have to look at this email chain one more time, I'm going to throw this laptop across the room, kind of way.

Yes, I know there are a million other terrible things. I could rattle off a few scenarios, but that's not why you're here.

You're here because your job sucks and you. want. out. NOW.

Well, even though you've found yourself in this pretty awful predicament, I'm glad you're here. Like you, I've struggled to find work that truly matches my creative personality, intense drive, and passion levels. Nothing really sticks for me. I can't seem to focus on just one thing because all the things are so cool.

It's annoying, but hey: somebunny's gotta be the quirky one in the (virtual/remote/post-pandemic) office, amirite?

What a quirky character!

And if you're a similar kooky-but-kinda/sorta-"smart"-creative type, I would guess you've been banging your head against the wall trying to find solutions to this "problem." (It's not an educated guess. Just a regular, flegular guessy guess, so don't freak out, my friend!)

Geez, G. You're right! I'm Ridiculously Creative, But I Don't Know What To Do With Myself. I'm Not Dumb Or Unmotivated. I Want to Do Cool Stuff All the Time – Forever.

Friend, I totally get it. I know exactly what you mean. So instead of telling you my long, drawn-out crybaby story, how about you answer me this question:

Have you thought about a career pivot into tech? Like, building your own websites, learning coding languages, and tinkering with mathematics? How about designing sites with all that creative know-how bumbling about in your brain? Or writing really cool, engaging stories and blog posts about... well, I dunno... computers??

No?

Really?

Well, I'm shocked/shook/ flabbergasted/all of the flippin' things because, with your creative mind, hyperdrive, and mountainous passion, you'd be a fantastic fit for the tech industry.

I know, I know... That's just my opinion, but seriously, you should consider jumping headfirst into tech.

(Or gingerly dip one toe at a time into the shallow end. Hey! It's your prerogative.)

Why?

(internal dialogue / shock / shookness / flabbergastry: Wow. You're seriously asking me 'Why?' right now... okay... You try to help some people, but... *sighs in three imaginary languages while looking into an invisible camera*)

Because once you learn HTML, you'll be on your way to becoming a well-versed webpage builder. And while there's zero dollar dollar bills y'all to be made from building a single webpage using HTML alone, it is THE foundation you need to start building your badass career in tech.

Your next question might be:

But G., Is Tech Really Right For Me? I Mean, I Will Wear My Fingers Down To Bloody Stumps For The Right (But Ill-Fitting) Job Until I Retire. Would Pivoting Make Sense For A Non-Math-y, Kinda Weird, Hella Creative, and Pretty Intense Human Being Like Me?

Well, my friend, there's only one way to find out. (Okay, friend-o... So, there are a billion free ways to find out, because this is the Internet, where resources are boundless. *insert Stanley Hudson eye roll* OMG.Chill.)

Before anything else, you'll need to assess whether or not you're even cut out for the #codelife – similar to #thuglife, but not really. Ice Cube is cooler than literally everyone and everything on the planet. It's science.

Take this Skillcrush quiz to see if a tech career is right for you.

Skillcrush is one of the coolest coursework platforms on the Internet.

I know because I'm one of their students! I'm currently on the Break Into Tech track, which features coursework in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more.

One of my favorite lessons is from their Git & GitHub course, where I learned how to communicate with my computer. I was all hearts-for-eyes for weeks after taking that course. You will be too!

Additionally, this post is not paid for or sponsored. I want to tell you that I'm legitimately obsessed with Skillcrush and several other coursework-based platforms. Not that you asked; now you know ;)

While there are many out there for you to choose from–because we've already established that this is the Internet where anything is possible on a Kevin Garnett level–I will personally recommend platforms that I've used on my journey to break into tech.

Want to learn more about the platforms I'm deeply invested in?

Come back next week when I list the Top 5 Web Developer Courses For Beginners Who Want To Keep Their Day Job While Learning To Code On The Side that have helped me learn coding and programming languages.
